Researchers from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa published a study showing that they can skillfully predict El Niño and La Niña 15 months ahead of time using only observations of the ocean surface temperature and height—no complex climate model needed.

While most people know about El Niño and how it impacts the weather, a new study from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa shows another climate pattern influences rainfall across the Islands, particularly during the spring season.

University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Assistant Professor of oceanography Malte Stuecker is a contributing author to the alarming report just published by the International Panel on Climate Change. The report found climate change is happening and accelerating, the earth will continue to warm and these changes are unequivocally caused by human activities.

An international team of scientists led by researchers from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa arrived in Honolulu recently after studying small-scale ocean mixing under El Niño conditions while aboard the Falkor, Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel.
