The project focuses on Hāpapa watershed’s three gulches (Kūlanihākoʻi, Waipuilani and Kēōkea) which are responsible for most of Kīhei’s stormwater flooding.

A total of $4,925,038 in federal funds have been allocated for local educational agencies in Maui County. The grants are intended to provide financial assistance to school districts for services that improve the teaching and learning of children at risk of not meeting academic achievement requirements.

A $17 million federal grant will help the state repair roads and highways damaged by heavy rain, floods, and landslides on Maui and Kauai in late February and early March last year.

“Haleakalā is like nowhere else in the world and the National Park helps to draw over two million visitors a year to Maui, but the park’s parking lots are due for renovation. This grant will help keep the Haleakalā the world class destination that it is while making visits easier and safer for our disabled guests,” said Sen. Akaka.

Maui will receive $800,000 in federal funds to build new bus shelters and install solar powered lighting, bike racks, and recycle containers.

The $1 million grant will help Maui keep pace with the growing demand for transit services, which now exceeds 2.7 million passenger boardings per year.

A presidential disaster declaration following a severe storm in March, made funding available to certain private, nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis in Maui County.
