129 firearms turned in during gun buyback event on Maui
Nearly 130 guns were turned in during the Maui Police Department’s gun buyback event held Saturday, June 14, at the Maui County Service Center in Kahului. The program is part of a broader effort to reduce the risk of gun violence and accidental shootings by removing unwanted and potentially dangerous weapons from homes and streets.
Hundreds of guns turned in for groceries in community buyback event
Some 514 firearms, numerous rounds of ammunition, and related items were turned in on Saturday at O‘ahu’s second gun buyback event. Individuals turning in firearms received a total of 531 gift cards valued at $5,310.
Maui Firearm Permit Applications Soar to Near Record Levels in 2020
Over the 20 year period between 2000 and 2020, the annual number of permits processed in Maui County increased 261.4 percent, the number of firearms annually registered soared 409.1 percent, and the tally of firearms annually imported was up 466 percent. Record high tallies of firearms registered and imported were reported for 2020.
