Last weekend’s northwest swell topped out at 10 foot during its peak Friday, providing plenty of opportunities for surfers on Maui another chance to ride the big stuff.

Maui natives such as Ian Walsh, Kai Barger, Billy Kemper, 16-year-old Ian Gentil, Hank Gaskell from Hana, Granger Larsen and a few others are all hoping to move on to the later rounds.

A pair of Hana surfers found themselves locked in a championship duel Sunday of an Association of Surfing Professionals three-star event in El Salvador.

The event also served as a fundraiser for Kuau Mart, the now closed but far from forgotten favorite North Shore surfer spot for grinds previously near Ho’okipa Beach Park.
