Work concludes on Maui project to restore 11 acres damaged by axis deer, protect water quality

The Hapapa Watershed project was designed to revegetate an area in South Maui that had been denuded by feral axis deer.

A collaborative project to protect against erosion, reduce flood risk, mitigate axis deer damage, and improve water quality is being implemented in an 11-acre area mauka of Kīhei. 

Kūlanihākoʻi Gulch maintenance in Kīhei starts Feb. 13

The nonprofit Maui Nui Marine Resource Council is working in Hapapa watershed to remove sediment that has accumulated in Kūlanihākoʻi  gulch before it reaches the ocean. The organization reports that the effort is part of its ongoing work to improve ocean water quality and prevent the smothering of coral in Māʻalaea Bay.

Maui Nui Marine Resource Council Awarded $210K Grant to Help Address Recurring Coastal Flooding in Kīhei

The project focuses on Hāpapa watershed’s three gulches (Kūlanihākoʻi, Waipuilani and Kēōkea) which are responsible for most of Kīhei’s stormwater flooding.
