Volcano Watch — Remembering the 1926 Maunaloa eruption a century later
April marked the 100-year anniversary of Mauna Loa’s 1926 Southwest Rift Zone eruption. This eruption is most remembered for the destruction of Ho‘ōpūloa village, a few miles north of Miloliʻi Bay. It also marks the first known instance of aerial photography of an advancing Hawaiian lava flow, and well-organized police-led eruption crowd management.
Visitors give big with $400K in donations to support Hawaiʻi and American Samoa parks
Every dollar given at the register stays in the park where it was donated, helping to care for these places—supporting wildlife like nēnē (Hawaiian geese) at Haleakalā and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes national parks, preserving cultural sites like the great heiau (temple) at Puʻukoholā National Historic Site, and enhancing the visitor experience.

The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority held its esteemed Tourism Legacy Awards luncheon on Wednesday as the culminating event of the 2024 Hawai‘i Tourism Conference. HTA proudly presented Tourism Legacy Awards to Kaua‘i’s Hamura Saimin and Hawai‘i’s own Chef Sam Choy for their long-standing achievements in serving Hawai‘i’s communities.
