New seabird restoration project highlights connection between culture and conservation

A seabird restoration project was initiated this week at Nuʻalolo Kai on the rugged and remote Nā Pali coast of Kauaʻi. The project is a partnership of multiple organizations and aims to restore seabird populations that have been lost from the site due to introduced predators.

Through conservation partnerships, hundreds of seabirds were rescued this year during seabird fallout season, which takes place roughly between Sept. 15 and Dec. 15 each year.

Hawai‘i’s Seabirds Need Your Help During Fallout Season

During fallout season (Sept. 15 to Dec. 15), people can help seabirds by keeping pet cats indoors; keeping pet dogs on a leash when walking; turning off or minimizing outdoor lighting; replacing outdoor lighting fixtures with seabird friendly lighting; closing window curtains at night; and keeping an eye out for seabirds that may need assistance.  

Kaua‘i Artist Paints Brighter Future for Native Birds

The project, which was supported by the County of Kaua‘i’s ‘Rise to Work’ program, uses street art to introduce Kaua‘i residents to endangered birds, and to the idea that both cats and birds are protected when cats are kept indoors.
