Effective Jan. 1st the Makawao HI-5 redemption center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

All Maui County HI5 redemption centers operated by Aloha Recycling temporarily closed on Wednesday due to a delay in reimbursement fee payments from the DOH.

Costco Wholesale Corporation has paid a fine of $4,799.40 for violating State deposit beverage container requirements.

Failure to properly meet reporting deadlines or improper reporting can result in penalty fines of up to $10,000 per violation per day.

Effective Sept. 1, 2015, the fee will decrease to one-cent per container in response to the state’s redemption rate, which decreased from 72.6% in fiscal year 2014 to 68.4% in the last fiscal year, which ended in June 2015.

The deposit fee for beverage containers in Hawai’i will increase by a half-cent to keep the successful HI-5 recycling program in operation for two more years.

Since the inception of the HI 5 program in 2005, a total of over 4 billion containers have been recycled, with an average of over 3,075 containers recycled per person.
