High winds and dangerous conditions in the Alenuihaha Channel may delay Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia’s departure from Lahaina until the weekend when crew, who are watching the weather closely, anticipate a possible window by Sunday. Until then, they have been training in the Pailolo Channel, between Maui and Molokaʻi.

Hōkūleʻa was due to arrive at Māʻalaea on Maui early this morning after being delayed for more than 24 hours due to Sunday’s severe weather conditions.

If weather conditions improve, Hōkūleʻa will depart at 6 a.m. this morning (Monday, Feb. 19) and will arrive at Māʻalaea Harbor by Tuesday morning, Feb. 20.

Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia will continue to sail around the Hawaiian Islands to reconnect and share stories & lessons learned on the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage.

Hōkūleʻa crossed the equator on Friday, marking an important milestone in her journey north from Tahiti back to Hawaiʻi.

Navigators steered by the setting stars in the western sky; later, the eastern horizon opened and manaiakalani and pimoe were used to set their course for home.

During her time on Maui, the Hikianalia crew will offer canoe tours to the community and will also be conducting educational opportunities for students and teachers, as well as training for future crew members on the Worldwide Voyage.

Maui welcomed the crew of the Hōkūle‘a as the Polynesian voyaging canoe embarks on the first international leg of its historic worldwide voyage.

The sweet potatoes were planted in organic soils at Ocean Vodka’s Farm in Kula in July of 2013, and will be taken aboard the Hōkūle‘a for food and research during the vessel’s worldwide journey that will span some 47,000 nautical miles.
