Demonstrators at Mayor’s Address Want Resolution to “Sacred Rocks”

A group of demonstrators held signs outside the venue for the Mayor’s State of the County Address on Thursday, calling for respect of the Hawaiian Culture, accountability, and an apology for comments made about rocks some consider to be sacred at ʻĪao Valley.

ʻĪao Valley Restoration Update

The ʻĪao Valley Restoration, Phase 1, project was delayed until later this week due to a mechanical issue. The park is still scheduled to open by summer.

The comments sparked a firestorm on social media, and drew instant condemnation from those criticizing Maui County’s handling of the flood repair project.

It took about 16 personnel from fire, police, and conservation officers to pull the woman back up the cliff to ʻĪao Valley Road.

Lost Hiker at ʻĪao Rescued After Overnight Stay

At around 6:05 a.m., fire crews spotted the female hiker about three miles up on left side of valley where the river splits.

UPDATE: ʻĪao Valley State Park Re-Opened After High Stream Flow

The park was closed yesterday for public safety, due to heavy rain that caused the level of ʻĪao Stream to be very high.
