VIDEO: Skiff From Japan Tsunami Found Off Maui
The 20 by 6 foot skiff was found by a Hawai’i longline fishing vessel about 700 nautical miles northeast of Maui. Registration numbers found on the skiff were used to identify the vessel. Authorities confirmed that it was washed away during the 2011 tsunami where it was registered in the Iwate Prefecture.
First Marine Debris From Japan Confirmed in Hawaiian Waters
The large blue plastic storage bin was found floating in the ocean off Waimanalo, O‘ahu, on September 18, 2012. The 4-foot cube bin, which is used for transport of live and frozen seafood, was spotted mid-way between Manana Island and the nearby pier by Makai Ocean Engineering staff.
