Maui’s Jennifer Suzuki, a teacher at Maui Waena Intermediate School was named the Maui District Teacher of the Year by the state Department of Education.

Finished videos from participating schools will be reviewed by the network, with a select few to air nationally during the coming year. With school back in session, Suzuki said work will soon begin on video reports to be produced by students focusing on immigration, poverty and education.

The Maui students were among more than a dozen Hawai’i schools that nearly swept the competition by winning 16 of 17 awards issued by the nonprofit organization.

Maui High School freshman Giel Tolentino was awarded a MacBook Pro at the weekend Family Sundays finale event at the Maui Mall.
