Hōkūleʻa visits West Hawaiʻi communities during statewide sail

Last week, voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa arrived at Keauhou last week after spending a few days at the historic Hawaiian fishing village of Miloliʻi and on the bay off the shores of Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau. During the two-week visit to Hawaiʻi Island, the crew is engaging with communities and schools. This weekend, Hōkūleʻa will head to Kawaihae, the last stop on west Moku O Keawe during the Statewide Pae ʻĀina Voyage.

DLNR: 50-60 coral colonies were damaged by lane markers from canoe regatta

Approximately 50-60 coral colonies sustained a range of minimal-to-significant damage from 60-pound cinder blocks placed in the ocean for a canoe regatta on Hawaiʻi Island last weekend, officials said. Dive teams with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources spent Tuesday documenting and photographing damage at Kailua Bay.

The Founders Regatta hosted by the Keauhou Canoe Club on Hawaiʻi Island was placed on temporary hold Saturday, after the discovery of course markers on the coral reef which state officials said may have caused “significant damage.”
