Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald appointed two individuals to fill judicial positions in the District and District Family Courts of the Second Circuit.

Maui Judge Kelsey Kawano has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the Circuit Court of the Second Circuit. The judicial office has been vacant since the retirement of Circuit Judge Joseph E. Cardoza in June 2019.

The Judicial Selection Commission has provided a list of four nominees for a vacancy on the Circuit Court of the Second Circuit on Maui. 

“By shifting the focus from the gruesome details of our Alex’s death to how we can prevent another family from suffering the loss of a loved one, Alex’s death will not be in vain,” said Cerezo’s mother, Patricia Villarruel.

Proceedings in a Maui murder case involving a machete attack in a mall restroom, have been suspended while a mental health examination is conducted.

A grassroots effort called STAE or “Steps to Avoid Eviction” aims to ensure that landlords get paid the rent they are owed and tenants are not evicted.

The selection process was turned over to the commission after the governor mistakenly made his selection two days late, missing the 30-day deadline outlined in the state constitution.
