Maui Hālau Compete in Hula Competition at Merrie Monarch

The week-long 51st Annual Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo on Hawaiʻi Island continues with kahiko or ancient style hula performances tonight. The competition portion of the festival got underway on Thursday night with the crowning of the new Miss Aloha Hula for 2014.

Two Maui Contestants Compete in Miss Aloha Hula Competition

The two Maui contenders include: Hulali Kaʻimiʻāina Ciera De Lima of Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka and Kamalani Kaleimomi Ka-hale-poli Kawaʻa of Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi.

Maui Makes Mark at 50th Merrie Monarch Hula Festival

Maui’s entrants into the 50th edition of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival finished strong in the kane and solo divisions with Hālau Kekuaokalā’au’ala’iliahi, under the direction of nā kumu hula ‘Iliahi and Haunani Paredes, earning a second place finish for the Kahiko Kāne division, and a fourth place finish for the ‘Auana Kāne division.

Liko Aʻe Native Hawaiian Scholarships Available

The funds will enable the disbursal of 40 to 50 additional scholarships this year.

The two hula dancers are from different halau, but performed together as classmates while attending Kahamehameha, Maui.

Two Maui Halau will participate in three nights of hula from April 28 to 30, at the 2011 Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, Hawaii.
