The Hawai’i State Division of Aquatic Resources will host virtual talk story sessions beginning next week for interested fishers in Maui County who want to exchange information, concerns and ideas with state staff.

Changing fisher behaviors over the last three years has allowed officers with the North Maui Community Fisheries Enforcement Unit to spend less time writing citations and more time on education and outreach.

Information on Maui specific rules for uhu or parrot fish species and goat fish species such as kumu, moano kea, and weke will be available.

The include testimony on proposed changes that include: bag and size limits for several popular nearshore fish, including goatfish, parrotfish or uhu, and Jacks including ulua and pāpio; and a prohibition on the harvest of blue male uhu for the two large uhu species, and slot limits for ʻōmilu.
