West Maui prepares for return of tourism: Merriman’s serves thousands of meals since August fires
As West Maui prepares for the return of tourism on Oct. 8, restaurants and businesses are adjusting to the ongoing need of residents while also gauging services for visitors. Since Aug. 10, Chef Peter Merriman and his team have fed thousands of displaced residents impacted by the fires, giving free meals to 1,000 people daily and serving approx. 45,000 meals in the first seven weeks of response.
Merriman’s Honolulu Opens at Kaka’ako’s Ward Village
The doors open June 23 on Peter Merriman’s first restaurant on O‘ahu, while other island locations, including Maui, mark big anniversaries this year.

Chef and restauranteur Peter Merriman plans to release his first cookbook, “Merriman’s Hawaiʻi, The Chef, The Farmer, The Food, The Islands,” in December. It gives readers a glimpse of Hawaiʻi through the eyes of the chef and restaurateur who has helped shape the cuisine and agriculture of Hawaiʻi for more than 25 years.
