A father and son are safe this morning after spending the night in heavy rains on a trail in ʻĪao Valley. The two were airlifted to safety at around 6:45 a.m. by crews from the Maui Fire Department’s Air-1 helicopter.

Heavy rains and poor conditions at ʻĪao forced the overnight suspension of a search for a missing father and son who had gone hiking on Friday afternoon, Aug. 9, 2013, and failed to return, officials said.

Crews arrived on scene at 8:37 p.m. and located two females and a male about a mile into the trail, authorities said.
