New plant discoveries celebrated during Native Plant Month
The discovery of five new plant species and the rediscovery of several species that were thought to have been lost are detailed in the new Rare Plant Program 2025 Island Highlights report. This gives enthusiasts for Hawaiian plants a great deal to celebrate during April’s Native Plant Month observance.
$4M in federal funding headed to Hawai‘i to recover native plants
The funding, which comes from the Inflation Reduction Act, will be used to identify translocation sites for 425 Hawaiian plants and improve their resiliency to climate change.
$7.1 million awarded to fight invasive species, recover rare native plants and wildlife
The US Department of Defense Readiness and Environmental Integration Program is awarding Hawai‘i $7,123,851 to protect and restore rare species of plants and animals found only in Hawai‘i. These actions will be conducted on lands near military training installations.
