The reminder comes as park biologists report that an adult nēnē from a known breeding pair was hit and killed on the park road during this past New Year’s Eve. Wind, rain, and poor visibility likely contributed to the event, according to the NPS.

Two more nēnē goose eggs were found today in Waikapū on Maui, this time near the 5th green of the Kamehameha Golf Club, and near the 12th hole and lake on the Kahili Golf Course.
Drive With Caution: Nēnē Nesting Season at Haleakalā
Nēnē breeding and nesting season has started at Haleakalā National Park, prompting an advisory to visitors to obey posted speed limits and exercise caution while driving in the park. Last year, park officials said that on average, there has been one nēnē road fatality per year during the nesting season.
