DLNR: Coastal Properties Face Expensive Challenges in Combating Erosion

She detailed the current state of beach erosion across Hawai‘i, citing government and academic reports that indicate 70% of the beaches on Maui, Kaua‘i, and O‘ahu are chronically eroding. By 2012, more than 13-miles of beach had completely disappeared due to erosion and seawall construction. 

BLNR Passes Highly Contested Beach Nourishment Project

The state BLNR heard from the Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (OCCL) on Item K-2, a programmatic statewide small-scale beach restoration (SSBR) permitting program that would reauthorize and expand the existing beach nourishment program OCCL to streamline activities. The motion is highly contested by many in the Maui community.
