Kaua‘i forest bird and seabird recovery and protection programs to move to a joint facility

The cancellation of a decades-long set-aside of land from the state of Hawai‘i to the County of Kaua‘i has paved the way for Kaua‘i’s renowned forest bird and seabird recovery and protection programs to move into a joint facility.

Kauaʻi Rapid Response Team Identifies New Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death

The Kauaʻi Rapid Response Team’s recent helicopter surveys detected the presence of virulent fungal pathogens that cause the rapid killing of ‘ōhi‘a trees in two new areas on Kaua’i. The recent Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death discoveries were along the upper Hanalei valley and along the north side of Powerline Trail.

Single Cat Results in the Death of Nine Endangered Native Seabird Chicks on Kaua‘i

A single, free-roaming cat killed at least nine endangered native Hawaiian seabird chicks over the course of three days on Kaua‘i. The native Hawaiian seabirds on Kaua‘i have no natural defenses against feral cats which have resulted in repeated fatalities to the endangered species.
