The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is alerting the public about the “100 Safe Days of Summer” campaign, in collaboration with county police departments, to promote safe driving practices during Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is urging everyone to make a plan for a designated driver before Halloween weekend begins. MADD is concerned anytime a holiday falls on a weekend when the risk of drunk driving deaths and injuries is higher.

Drunk driving is completely preventable yet claimed 172 lives nationwide from 6 p.m. Friday to 5:59 a.m. Monday during the 2019 Memorial Day weekend, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating crashes, accounting for nearly a quarter of these deaths, according to a 2019 report on recreational boating by the U.S. Coast Guard.

With St. Patrick’s Day continuously ranking as one of the most dangerous holidays on our nation’s roads, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is reminding everyone to plan ahead for a safe ride home.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Hawaii virtually kicked off its “Tie One On for Safety” red ribbon campaign, promoting safe driving through the holidays and upcoming year. Drivers across the country will display MADD red ribbons on their vehicles as a promise to plan ahead and designate a non-drinking driver.
