Smoking’s impact across racial, ethnic groups focus of UH study
Researchers from the University of Hawai’i Cancer Center collaborated on a study that sheds light on the complex links between smoking habits, epigenetics (the factors beyond DNA sequence that impact gene activity), and the risk of smoking-related diseases, such as lung cancer.
Cancer impact in Hawaiʻi examined in UH Cancer Center report 
Annually, an average of 7,393 Hawaiʻi residents are diagnosed with invasive cancer and 2,393 individuals die from this disease. There are more than 66,779 Hawaiʻi residents who are cancer survivors.
Ige Vetoes Bill Repealing Tobacco Prevention Funds
Governor Ige yesterday vetoed HB1296, a bill that would have repealed the Hawaiʻi Tobacco Prevention and Control Trust Fund (Trust Fund) to fill budget shortfalls. The bill was sent back to the house — along with his 26 vetoes announced yesterday — citing the state’s improved financial situation.
