Chickenpox outbreak on Kauaʻi increases to 10 cases

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health is reporting the expansion of a community outbreak of chickenpox (varicella) on the island of Kauaʻi to 10 cases, linked to four schools, raising concerns that the highly contagious disease will continue to spread. The DOH Disease Investigation Branch urges families and schools to take proactive steps to limit the spread of chickenpox on Kauaʻi.

Health alert: Mumps case confirmed on Hawaiʻi Island

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health has confirmed a case of mumps on Hawaiʻi Island. The case is community-acquired and not travel-related, suggesting that mumps may currently be circulating on the island.

Measles Virus Detected at Wastewater Sampling Site in West Hawai’i County

The Hawai‘i Department of Health is closely monitoring a positive wastewater sample for measles virus, which marks the first wastewater detection of the virus in the state. The sample was collected Aug. 11, 2025, at a site in West Hawai‘i County, and DOH was notified of the result on Aug. 26, 2025. No suspected measles cases have been reported as of Aug. 27, 2025.

DOH responding to increased Pertussis cases in Hawaiʻi in 2025

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health continues to respond to a rise in pertussis (whooping cough) cases statewide. As of July 31, 2025, DOH has identified 203 cases of pertussis – more than double the 84 cases identified in all of 2024.

All Legislative employees working in the Hawaiʻi State Capitol will be able to be vaccinated as members of its prioritized vaccination system’s Phase 1b (i.e., individuals essential for government operations), on Jan. 28, 2021.
