April 27, 2021 COVID-19 Update: 54 Cases (37 O‘ahu, 7 Maui, 5 Hawai‘i Island, 2 Kaua‘i, 2 Out-of-State); 1 Death
The state Department of Health reports that there were 54 additional COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Tuesday, including 37 on O‘ahu, seven on Maui, five on Hawai‘i Island, two on Kaua‘i, and two in Hawai‘i residents diagnosed while out of state. There were a total of 1,096 cases logged over the past two weeks, 194 of them in Maui County.
More than Half of New COVID-19 Cases on Maui are Variants
Health officials say more than half of the COVID-19 cases on Maui at this point, as identified through weekly reports, are represented by “variants of concern,” B1.429 and B.1.427.
Additional COVID-19 Variants Detected by Hawai‘i State Laboratories Division
To date, nine samples of the L452R variant have been identified and four specimens that exhibit a molecular clue associated with the UK B1.1.7 have been found. This indicates the B1.1.7 variant may be present in Hawai‘i, according to the state Department of Health.
