Two visitors were airlifted from the Waiheʻe Ridge Trail during separate incidents on Wednesday in which they slipped and fell on the muddy trail and were injured.

The 36-year-old man and 31-year-old woman from Arizona were walking back to their car when they became stranded at the two streams that they were able to cross earlier.

A 46-year-old Kīhei man was airlifted from Waiheʻe Valley in Central Maui on Friday night after he became stranded by rising stream waters. The man was hiking alone in Waiheʻe Valley and became stranded above the second swinging bridge by swift moving stream water.

Wailuku firefighters responded to a call about a man found exhausted on the shoreline near Milepost 5, off of Kahekili Highway in Waihe‘e on Saturday, Feb. 7 at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Fire Crews on Maui were called to the Waiheʻe Ridge Trail on Saturday afternoon to assist a 64-year-old woman who injured her ankle while hiking in the area with a group of friends, officials said.

Firefighters from Wailuku and a rescue crew from Kahului responded to the scene where the man had slipped on the muddy path, injured his knee, and was unable to walk out on his own, authorities said.

Rescue personnel from the Maui Fire Department rappelled down approximately 125-feet to the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

When the man called 911 at around 5 a.m., he told authorities he had run out of water and was suffering from dehydration, fire officials said. The man related that he was hiking in the area over the last two days and could not complete his trek out of the area.

Crews were called to the scene at 9:29 a.m. to respond to a group of students that were caught in the flash flood about 100-feet upstream of the river mouth.
