ʻĪao Valley State Monument on Maui, will remain closed indefinitely due to extensive damage from heavy rain and flooding that occurred on the night of Sept. 13 and early morning on Sept. 14, 2016.

Today is the deadline to comment on a draft environmental assessment filed by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Maui Public Works Department for the proposed modification of the ʻĪao Stream (Wailuku River) Flood Control Project located in Wailuku.

The cleanup is the second at the site, following a successful event on May 30th in which about 60 volunteers spent four hours removing approximately 12 tons of debris from the beach area.

The Maui County Council adopted a resolution that urges the Hawaiʻi State Board on Geographic Names to rename ʻĪao Stream to Wailuku River.
