#west maui ridge to reef initiative

For Maui sites, the Aqualink dashboard shares information such as sea surface temperature, wind, wave, and heat stress analysis while Hui O Ka Wai Ola provides data on salinity, pH, turbidity (water cloudiness/murkiness), and nitrate levels (a wastewater and/or fertilizer indicator). The partnership is based on the idea of “thinking globally, acting locally.” By combining local insights with global data, the community has more tools to understand the impacts of climate change on marine environments. 

Hui O Ka Wai Ola released a new report on coastal water quality at dozens of locations from Honolua Bay to ‘Āhihi-Kīna’u Natural Area Reserve. The report summarizes changes—both improvements and declines—in water quality over eight years of data collection and confirms that measurements at sites in the Lahaina area remain within normal ranges.

Maui’s volunteer-based ocean water quality monitoring program Hui O Ka Wai Ola has been evaluating water quality in Maui since 2016. This week, the program celebrated a special milestone: its 100th sampling week in South Maui.

The grant will support the work of Hui O Ka Wai Ola, a community-based ocean water quality monitoring program co-managed by Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, The Nature Conservancy, and West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative.

In this presentation, presenters will discuss the impacts of reduced tourism on water quality at Kahekili Beach Park in West Maui, including nutrient loading, emerging organic pollutants, and acidification, and what these changes could mean for coral reef health.

The volunteer-based Hui O Ka Wai Ola ocean water quality testing program has expanded again, with the addition of 12 more testing sites in South Maui.

The meeting, hosted by the citizen science group Hui o Ka Wai Ola, will address concerns about brown water and what to do about it.

Hui O Ka Wai Ola is the first community-based water quality monitoring program on Maui to measure for nutrients in coastal waters.

With one of the most extensive coral reefs communities in Hawaiʻi, Maui County has been an especially important ground-zero for coral reefs studies.

A boatload of decision makers visited Maui waters to see firsthand how land-based pollutants and unsustainable fishing practices are killing coral reefs.

A Watershed Characterization Report was intended to evaluate watershed processes and determine land uses and activities that may generate non-point source pollutants or alter hydrolic and ecological processes within the three watersheds.

A rain garden is described as a strategically located, low-lying area planted with native vegetation that intercepts runoff so pollutants can be captured and filtered.
