Everyone talks about the nachos. They’re for serious eaters, for sharing, and for taking home later to pick at. At Ocean’s Beach Bar and Grill, the happy hour features $2.50 drafts, with the exception of Guinness and Dead Guy Ale for $4.50, $2.50 Mai Tais, and $2 off all cocktails and appetizers from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., seven days a week.

This sports bar has a handful of flat screens littering the space, pool tables, and useable bathrooms, for the girls who wonder about that sort of thing. The large space is windowless. Instead there are doors and wood panels that slide and close, and while business is going on, remain open and screen free. The décor is woody and the lighting is dark. It’s where people go to hang out, sip on brews, and catch the game. A large stage is used each week for regular live music sets and errant performers who roll into town.

Going back to the epic nachos, for $10.95 (minus $2.00 if you go during happy hour), you get a huge mounded plate of chips on a bed of beans, interlaced with gooey cheese, your choice of beef, pork or chicken, with jalapenos, olives, sour cream, salsa, and guacamole. Definitely reach for the hot sauce to douse the mini hill that is your nachos.

The fish and chips are also portioned to share. Huge pieces of fish, fried up crispy and hot come to the table on a bed of fries, with tartar sauce and lemon wedges. It’s a little oily, but hey, it’s fried bar food. Food prices vary, with the American fare rather moderately priced during non-happy hours, and quite inexpensively during happy hours.

The bar is located at 1819 South Kihei Road, and is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Call 891-2414 for more details. Reservations are not necessary. Check out the live music schedule as something and someone is always going down at Ocean’s.

Almost forgot, try the stuffed potato skins. Greasy goodness lives on.
