By Wendy Osher
The Blood Bank of Hawai’i hosts it’s monthly blood drive on Maui this week. The Blood drive run from June 20-22, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kahului.
Donations are accepted at the Church’s Kahului Hawaii Stake Gymnasium located at 125 West Kamehameha Ave: Monday June, 20 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 21 and 22 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The donation process usually takes about an hour, and includes a confidential interview and a mini-physical. The actual blood collection portion, takes just five to eight minutes.
According to Blood Bank officials, only 2 percent of the eligible population in Hawai’i donates blood. More donors, they say, are always needed. Hundreds of patients in Hawai’i rely on blood donors for their survival.
To become a blood donor, you must be:
- In good health
- 18 years of age or older (17 with signed Blood Bank parent/legal guardian consent form)
- Weigh 110 pounds or more
- Bring a valid photo I.D. with date of birth
Blood donations are often used for surgical procedures, treatment of accident victims and chemotherapy patients, and by mothers and newborns during delivery.
