Maui County Unemployment Claims Decline 5.2%

Statewide initial unemployment claims decreased by 5.9% this week and Maui County initial unemployment claims decreased 5.2%, compared to the same week in 2010, according to data released by the State Dept. of Labor and Industrial Relations today.

Maui County had 239 initial claims filed this week compared with 252 filed same week a year ago 2010. This is the third week in a row that Maui County saw a decrease in unemployment filings. Statewide week total initial unemployment filings were 1,805 and filings during the same week in 2010 were 1,918.

Comparing the counties between 2011 and 2010 showed that Oahu had 61 fewer claims filed; Hawaii had 11 fewer claims filed; Maui had 13 fewer claims filed and Kauai had 22 fewer claims filed.

In percentage changes, comparing the current week to the same week a year ago showed that Oahu had a decrease of 5.7%; Hawaii (Big Island) had decrease of 3.0%; Maui decreased 5.2% and Kauai decreased 15.8%.
