‘Biggest Ever’ First Light Movie Schedule
By Madeline Ziecker
The Maui Film Festival has announced the films which will be featured in the upcoming “First Light” Film Festival, along with festival showtimes. First Light will begin on the evening of November 22 with two films showing at the Maui Arts & Cultural center.
Maui Film Festival co-director Barry Rivers describes this year’s festival as their “biggest ever.” The festival will include 50 Academy Screenings over the course of 16 days, with 33 premieres included. Featured films will include various genres and ratings.
Movies in this year’s festival line-up include cast members such as Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, Colin Firth, Charlize Theron, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogen, Zach Galifianakis, Ewan McGregor, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman, and Brad Pitt.
First Light begins with two showings on a Tuesday night: Rango at 5 p.m. and The Descendants at 7:30 p.m.
Rango (PG) is an animated family feature where Johnny Depp carries the voice of a chameleon undergoing a mid-life crisis in the Wild West. The film is directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean). Some have joked that Rango resembles a diluted children’s remake of Johnny Depp’s classic character in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas based on the resemblance in both movie posters and the shared lead.
The Descendants (R), directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways), was shot in Kauai and tells the story of a broken family. George Clooney plays a father trying to re-connect with his daughters after his wife suffers an accident.
