6.7 Santa Cruz Islands Quake, No Tsunami Threat to Hawaii

There is no tsunami threat to Hawai’i following a 6.7 preliminary magnitude earthquake in the Santa Cruz Islands that occurred at 12:17 p.m. HST on Friday, February 1, 2013.

Officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center say that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to the state.

The quake was centered 233 miles East of Kira Kira, Solomon Islands; 381 miles East South East of Honiara, Solomon Islands; and 1236 miles East of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to estimates released by the USGS.
