42 Arrested in Maui Impaired Driving Crackdown

Maui police made a total of 42 arrests for drivers operating a motor vehicle while under the influence during a three week campaign that ended on Jan. 1, 2014, officials said.

The crackdown was part of a national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign that began on December 13, 2013, and concluded in the new year.

There were a total of 14 intoxication controlled checkpoints conducted county-wide during the campaign, said Lt. Ricky Uedoi, traffic section commander for the Maui Police Department.

In addition to the OUI arrests, enforcement efforts over the campaign period also resulted in the following arrests, citations and recoveries: 239 felony arrests; 135 warrant arrests; 57 drug arrests; 15 stolen vehicles recovered; 13 seat belt citations; 3 child seat citations; 25 suspended license citations; 87 insurance citations; 54 speeding citations; and 3 reckless driving citations.

“As a reminder, police will be setting up unannounced roadblocks this weekend for the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday,” said Lt. Uedoi.

Uedoi said individuals are encouraged to drive sober and to drive responsibly. “If you are going to drink alcoholic beverages, please be wise and use a sober driver. Don’t drive after drinking,” he said.
