Friday the 13th Pe’ahi “Jaws” Session Makes History

We recently received images of two men surfing Pe’ahi “Jaws” on boards with no fins. On Friday March 13, 2015 a High Surf Warning was posted and the National Weather Service had forecasted 20-22 foot faces at deep water breaks on Maui. Strong northerly winds of 15 to 25+ mph were also expected.
Ideal conditions were not in the cards for Pe’ahi “Jaws.” Despite the rocky conditions, two surfers made history.
The email sent to MauiNOW by Skim Hawaii stated, “On Friday, the infamous Bill “Beaker” Bryan and Maui resident Sean McClenahan made surfing and skimboarding history surfing Peahi finless. With a 12-15 foot ground swell in the water and linking up with one of Pe’ahi’s expert waterman Jayson Blue, it was on. Despite the strong northerly winds, making for dangerous conditions for Jaws, they managed to successfully tow-in to a few bombs surfing their skimboards before things got too ugly.”
On Instagram Sean wrote, “Just rode the biggest wave of my life on my Victoria medium large skimboard at Jaws Pe’ahi, Maui. First guys to surf Jaws on a skim with Bill Bryan. Mahalos for the tow and rescues Jayson Blue.”
Bill Bryan said, “Stormy conditions made it a sketchy call but thanks to the the great local coffee and a pre dawn nudge from Jerome Baker, local legend Jayson Blue motored me a few miles up the coast against monster chop to the line-up. After checking it for a few minutes and seeing up close that it was indeed possibly too bumpy, I decided to try one anyhow. For one, it was “small” Jaws and what the heck, made it all this way… Elated to make the first attempt, going goofy foot, fake frontside, the trick that got me through the hole at Teahupoo and of course wedge many times. Stoked to have the entire playground to myself. Feeling pretty satisfied it was a wrap, and just before heading back, we were really lucky to find Sean floating out somewhere between the middle of the ocean and Maui on his skim! As we rolled up on the little black spec in the ocean we were investigating I realize it’s Sean patiently waiting his turn! We spoke earlier but I wasn’t sure he’d make it. Did he ever! Beyond stoked to see him and even more stoked to watch him shred the place to bits solo as I joined the crowd that had drawn and hooted him on from the cliff! Epic climax to an incredible 4 1/2 month Hawaii trip!”
