Maui Police have identified the pedestrian killed in Wednesday’s fatal traffic crash on the Hāna Highway as Michael Machado, 46, a former Molokaʻi resident, with no local address.
Police say Machado’s next of kin have since been notified of his death.
Machado was struck by a multi-purpose vehicle while walking along the Hāna Highway East of the Hoʻokele Street intersection in Kahului on Wednesday afternoon, May 6, 2015.
He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died.
Police say the 21-year-old Wailuku resident who was driving the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe MPV did not suffer any injuries and was wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident. The vehicle, police say, incurred only minor damages.
The incident was the third traffic fatality on Maui County roads in 2015 compared to 10 at the same time last year.
