Solo Sessions: Jon Anderson, the ‘Voice of YES,’ on June 19

Singer-songwriter-musician Jon Anderson–“the Voice of YES”–will perform at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater on Friday, June 19, beginning at 7:30 p.m., as part of The MACC’s signature “Solo Sessions” series: presenting musicians and their personal stories in an intimate setting.

Anderson, known for his work with the superband YES of the 1970s and 1980s, has one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock. As the lead vocalist and creative force behind the band, Anderson was the author and a major creative influence in a series of epic hits. His role in creating such complex pieces as “Close to the Edge,” “Awaken” and “The Gates of Delirium” was paramount to the band’s success.

Anderson also coauthored the group’s biggest hits, including “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Roundabout” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart.” He is also responsible for most of the mystically themed lyrics and concepts which were part of many YES releases and crucial components of the classic YES sound. His recurring themes also include environmentalism, pacifism and sun worship.

This Solo Sessions show will offer an acoustic journey through Anderson’s career, involving storytelling and singing the hits he wrote for YES, works he wrote with Vangelis, and a few new songs. He will perform self-accompanied on acoustic guitar, mountain dulcimer, piano and ‘ukulele.
