Survey: Maui Ranked #2 on Top 10 US Destinations List
Maui is ranked number 2 on a top 10 list of domestic destinations being booked for 2016, according to the Travel Trends Survey released today by the Travel Leaders Group, a company that touts itself as America’s largest travel agency company.
Maui moved up a spot from number 3 in 2015, and ranked just a tenth of a percentage point behind Orlando, Florida, which also moved up a spot from the previous survey.
The survey asked agents to name up to five top destinations they are already booking.
Results for the 2016 Top US Destinations list is as follows:

- 2. Maui, HI 35.8%
- 3 Cruise – Alaska 35.3%
- 4 New York, NY 30.6%
- 5 Las Vegas, NV 28.8%
- 6 Honolulu, HI 21.5%
- 7 Los Angeles, CA 16.0%
- 8 San Francisco, CA 15.1%
- 9 Chicago, IL 14.3%
- 10 Miami/Miami Beach, FL 13.9%
The Travel Leader’s Group survey was based on actual booking data, with the survey conducted between Nov. 17 and Dec. 8, 2015. Company officials say the survey took into consideration responses from 1,316 US-based travel agency owners, managers and frontline travel agents.
Participants included personnel with the flagship Travel Leaders brand and Travel Leaders Group’s All Aboard Travel, Cruise Specialists, Nexion, Protravel International, Results! Travel, Travel Leaders Corporate, Tzell Travel Group and Vacation.com units.
Travel Leaders Group CEO Ninan Chacko commented in a press release saying, “Year-over-year bookings are strong heading into 2016, reflecting the psyche of the American traveler and the continued belief that travel is viewed as a right versus a luxury. The positive booking data also reflects how our agents work to exceed each client’s individual travel needs and comfort levels.”
The company also compiled a Top 2016 International Destinations list in which agents were asked to name up to five top destinations they are already booking.
Results for the 2016 Top International Destinations list is as follows:
1 CRUISE – Caribbean 42.9%
2 Cancun, Mexico 35.1%
3 CRUISE – Europe (River) 24.4%
4 London, U.K. 23.5%
5 Punta Cana, Dominican Republic 19.8%
6 Rome, Italy 19.5%
7 CRUISE – Europe (Mediterranean) 18.2%
8 Florence/Tuscany, Italy 13.7%
9 Montego Bay, Jamaica 12.3%
10 Playa del Carmen/Riviera Maya, Mexico 11.6%
Notably absent from the list this time around was France, which dropped out of the top 10, falling less than a percentage point behind Mexico’s Riviera Maya, which came in at number 10.
“Overall, the trends are very positive, yet a spotlight continues to shine on Paris,” said Chacko. He continued saying, “It’s more telling that an overwhelming majority of our agents indicated they’d travel to Paris given the opportunity – an endorsement not only for the famed city, but also for not allowing fear to dictate our lives.”
