The Native Hawaiian Constitutional Convention being organized by the Naʻi Aupuni organization is being challenged under a new motion filed in the US Supreme Court.

The civil contempt motion was filed by a grassroots group that claims the move to hold the convention or ʻAha, evades a court injunction already in place.

The US Supreme Court issued a decision earlier this month that put a hold on the counting of votes in an election that would have determined delegates to participate in the convention.

Last week, the Naʻi Aupuni decided to terminate the election and proceed with the convention by including all delegate nominees to discuss the topic of self-governance.

Naʻi Aupuni representatives say they will oppose the motion and plan to continue to move forward with the February gathering.
