The Maui Interscholastic League track and field championship trials on Friday were highlighted by four new meet records, including two jump marks more than 30 years-old.

Baldwin High School’s record-breakers, La’akea Kahoohanohano-Davis and Kaitlin Smith, each broke two records in their respective divisions, closing out the night with monster efforts in the triple jump that erased the meet’s two oldest records previously held by former St. Anthony High School standouts.

No surprise that Friday’s spotlight would shine on Kahoohanohano-Davis and Smith, two of the state’s top performers in the jumps and hurdles. Especially since the duo have combined to break almost a dozen championship meet records already this year.

Kahoohanohano-Davis showed up 15 minutes before last call in the boys long jump and quietly warmed up with a 22-foot first jump, followed by a 21-footer on his second try.

At that point, Baldwin jump coach Tommie Gomes said; “I was just looking for him to hit something in the 22-plus range, which is what you would expect for someone who didn’t come early and didn’t warm up properly.”

Oh, wait a minute, Kahoohanohano-Davis is no ordinary jumper — in any of the three jump disciplines — as his resume ranks No. 1 all-time among boys in the history of the league. Only former Kaahumanu Hou jumper Ryan Schmidt can compare with the Baldwin senior.

To the cheers of the fans and Baldwin faithful, Kahoohanohano-Davis’ third and final long-jump attempt stood the test of time and all previous distances, landing 24 feet, 8.5 inches from where it started.

King Kekaulike’s Jansen Agapay set the previous record of 23-3.5 in 2013. Kahoohanohano-Davis entered the meet with a PR of 23-8, which ties the current non-wind-aided long jump mark set by Saint Louis’ Trevor Mau in 2009.

“He just nailed the jump,” Gomes said. “As long as I’ve been coaching that’s the farthest and best long jump I’ve ever seen.”

The wind-aided jump also eclipsed the state meet’s wind-aided record of 24-6.5 set by former Olympic decathlon gold-medalist Brian Clay of Castle in 1998.

Kahoohanohano-Davis wasted little time making history Friday, landing a 48-6.5 triple jump on his first try, destroying Mark Joaquin’s long-time meet record of 46-3.75

Gomes was familiar with Joaquin’s MIL record and mentioned it to Kahoohanohano-Davis before the meet.

“Joaquin set the triple jump record on his last jump in 1983,” Gomes recalled. “I know this because his jump came after I went 45-plus on my last jump to take the lead. Then Mark Joaquin came back on his last attempt to beat me and set the MIL record.

“So how awesome is it for my jumper to comeback and beat the record from the person who beat me 33 years ago.”

Gomes added: “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anyone land that deep into the pit.”

Today’s finals of the 2016 MIL track and field championships start with field events at 4 p.m. The first running event, the girls 100 hurdles, starts at 5 p.m.

For Baldwin’s Smith, it was the high hurdles that got things rolling.

Smith broke her own meet record in the highs of 15.21 seconds with a time of 15.02. She leads all qualifiers in the girls long jump at 17-5 and shattered a 36-year-old record in the triple jump with a second jump of 36-6.75. Then minutes later, Smith rewrote her own record with a final jump of 36-9.25.

St. Anthony’s Darnell Cristi held the previous record of 36-2.25 for 36 years.

“I didn’t know the record was that old until they announced it,” Smith said. “I thought it was possible when I heard it was only 36-2, because my PR was 36-6. And I moved my mark up 10 feet . . . it makes my speed more controllable for the first two phases of the jump.”

Friday was finals for two events, the boys pole vault and the girls high jump, which produced surprising results when all was said and done.

Lahainaluna’s Anis Bel won the vault with fewer misses at 14-0. Bel made good on his winning jump on his first attempt, while Baldwin’s Sean Fukuhara needed three jumps to make the same height.

“As soon as I went over the bar and landed, I couldn’t believe it and I looked up and the bar and said, ‘Wow, I just cleared that,’ “ said Bel, who is the first Lahainaluna vaulter to win the MIL title since Gordon Casco did it in the early ‘70s, nearly a half-century ago.

“I was supposed to go unto a 15-foot pole this week, but I didn’t get the chance to at practice because my legs were kind of sore the whole week. But I got a chance today to get on a 14-foot pole, 165 and I finally vaulted over my hand hold, so I was really stoked about that.”

King Kekaulike’s Rose Love won the girls high jump at 5-2, pushing runner-up Dominique Wenzler-Stevens and third-place finisher Logan Keely of Kamehameha Maui to personal-best marks of 5-0.
