UPDATE: Double Fatality on Kūihelani Highway

UPDATE: The female operator of the black Scion has been identified as 33-year old Melissa Egbert of Lahaina. The male operator of the silver Nissan has been identified as 29-year old Joshua Apo of Wailuku. The accident was reported at about 3:49 p.m.

PREVIOUS POST: On Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016 at about 4 p.m., a motor vehicle accident occurred on Kūihelani Highway (Hwy 380) at about Mile 4 in Kahului.

A silver Nissan sedan was traveling north on Kūihelani Highway within the opposing south-bound lane of travel. The Nissan collided head-on with a black Scion sedan that was traveling south on Kūihelani Highway. A third vehicle, a blue Hyundai sedan, was also traveling south on the highway and collided into the Scion.

The lone male operator of the Nissan and the lone female operator of the Scion were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room where they both later died from their respective injuries, according to Maui police. The two occupants of the Hyundai were also transported to the emergency room where they were treated for minor injuries.

The male operator was a 29-year old resident of Wailuku. The female operator was a 33-year old resident of Lahaina. The occupants of the Hyundai were tourists from Washington.

The accident caused a road closure between Puʻunēnē Avenue and Honoapiʻilani Highway for about four hours while police conducted their investigation.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined and are under investigation.

This is Maui County’s 17th and 18th traffic fatality in 2016 as compared to 19 at the time last year.
