West Maui fire crews airlifted a 65-year-old male visitor from Ontario, Canada, after he was injured in a fall at the “Olivine Pools” in Kahakuloa and was unable to walk.

The incident was reported at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017.

At 3 p.m., Napili firefighters arrived at the parking area near mile marker 16 of the Kahekili Highway and hiked down to the man, who was at the pools near the ocean.

Fire officials say the man lost his footing and fell down on the rocks, injuring himself. He tried but was not able to bear weight on his feet nor could he walk back up the trail.

Because of deteriorated trail conditions from recent rains, fire crews brought in the fire department helicopter and airlifted the man to a landing zone on Kahekili Highway.

Paramedics treated the man’s injuries and transported him to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

Firefighters from Napili, Lahaina and Rescue 10 out of Kahului responded to the rescue.
