Chinese Visitor Pulled from Waters off Keawakapu, Maui

For the second time in as many days, a visitor was pulled unresponsive from waters at Keawakapu Beach in South Maui. The 55-year-old man from China was transported to the hospital in critical condition where he was recovering at last report.

The incident was reported on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017 at around 11:19 a.m. Emergency crews were called to the south end of the beach for a man who was pulled from the ocean fronting the Wailea Ekahi Village condominiums.

Wailea firefighters arrived on scene at 11:23 a.m. to find the man on the beach with bystanders performing CPR. Paramedics arrived and continued advanced life-saving measures until the man regained a pulse and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Fire officials say the man was snorkeling with his wife along the reef not far from shore. After his wife returned to the beach she noticed that her husband was not with her, and a visual search from shore was unsuccessful.

Bystanders found the victim floating unresponsive about 30 yards offshore and pulled the man back to the beach. A police officer on vacation from the mainland was nearby and got early CPR started until emergency crews arrived.

An engine and ladder company, along with a paramedic crew from Wailea responded to the near-death ocean incident.

On Thursday morning, a visitor from Canada was pulled unresponsive from waters off of Keawakapu Beach. The victim was identified as a 52-year-old female visitor from Canada. Authorities say that despite all efforts the woman could not be resuscitated and died at the scene in that incident.
