To protect visitor safety, the Summit and Kīpahulu Districts of Haleakalā NP will close at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2018, in anticipation of heavy winds and rain.

The entrance gates will be locked and the park will not open for sunrise viewing on Wednesday or Thursday morning (September 12 or 13, 2018). Park managers will assess conditions on the morning of Thursday, September 13 and re-open the park once it is safe to do so.

The Kīpahulu and Hosmer Grove campgrounds will close at noon on Tuesday. Back country hikers have been notified they will need to leave the park before 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. In anticipation of Tropical Storm Olivia, no back country camping permits will be issued beginning Tuesday morning. All Cabin Reservations for Tuesday and Wednesday have been cancelled.
