A couple visiting Maui was rescued from the area known as Olivine Pools in West Maui after a large wave nearly pulled them in to the ocean, fire officials said. A subsequent wave then washed the couple back on to the rugged shoreline, according to department reports.

Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said the man and woman able to make up it to dry land but were unable to make their way back up the steep and slippery trail leading the Kahekili Highway.

Firefighters were able to get to the victims and assisted them up the trail. Both were in stable condition but suffered multiple cuts and scrapes.

The 24-year-old female visitor was transported by medics to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in good condition. The 36-year-old male visitor refused further medical attention.
