Rockfall Mitigation on Honoapiilani Past Kapalua Begins Feb. 26

The local access restriction placed on Honoapiilani Highway (Route 30) past Kapalua on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, was lifted as of 11:30 a.m., but will be reinstated during work to address the rock fall hazard daily from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26.

The local access restriction on Honoapiilani Highway was set out of an abundance of caution following rockfalls on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23.

Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) crews and a local rockfall contractor have inspected the highway between the sites of the initial rockfalls at Honokohau Valley (Mile Marker 36.5) and the Nakalele Point Light Station (Mile Marker 41) and will conduct field work to clean the slopes.

Rock scaling with be done to remove boulders and rocks loosened from recent heavy rains from the slopes above the highway. The crews will begin addressing approximately 10 sites starting at Mile Marker 41 and will work towards Lahaina from Tuesday, Feb. 26 until done. Work will take place weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Intermittent full closures of the highway will be in place as the rocks are knocked down and cleaned from the highway. This will be done in 15 minutes intervals.

During work hours, Honoapiilani Highway between Fleming Beach (approximately Mile Marker 31) Kahekili Highway at Camp Maluhia will be closed to all but local traffic. Emergency responders will also be allowed through the area.
