A High Surf Advisory has been posted for the south shores of all islands in Maui County through 10:00 a.m. Thursday for surf heights of 5 to 8 foot faces. Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

A Small Craft Advisory is posted for Pailolo and ʻAlenuihāhā channels as well as Māʻalaea Bay through 6:00 p.m. Sunday. East winds up to 30 knots are forecasted along with rough seas of 9 to 15 feet. Inexperienced mariners should avoid navigating in these conditions.

North: Wave heights are expected around waist/shoulder high by sunset.

West: Spots catching the new south-southwest could get up to waist/chest high waves today. Spots not catching the swell are expected to be in the ankle to knee high range.

South: Chest/head high waves are expected today. The best breaks could see overhead waves on the sets.

Screen Shot 2015-05-06 at 8.39.35 PMOur current south-southwest is expected to ease late in the afternoon and throughout the night. Friday an incoming swell will overlap with the current one. That second pulse is expected to peak over the weekend and ease early next week.

A new northwest swell is expected to build Thursday, peaking late Friday up to waist high or so at the best spots.

Keep in mind, surf heights are measured on the face of the wave from trough to crest. Heights vary from beach to beach, and at the same beach, from break to break.
