Justice Department: two Maui men sentenced for 2014 racially motivated attack in Kahakuloa

Two men from Maui were sentenced in federal court for their racially motivated attack on a white man who was attempting to move into their neighborhood of Kahakuloa. Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi, 33, was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison; and Levi Aki Jr., 33, was sentenced to four years and two months in prison.

Justice Department: Two Maui men found guilty of hate crimes for racially motivated attack in Kahakuloa

After a two-week jury trial, a federal jury today found Defendants Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi, 32, and Levi Aki, Jr., 33, each guilty of a hate crime for what prosecutors described as “racially motivated attacks” on C.K., a white man, when he attempted to move into the home he had purchased in their Kahakuloa neighborhood.

Man Accused of “Hate Crime” in Mākena Released After Posting $10K Bail

A Lahaina man accused of a “hate crime” was arrested on Friday for assault charges related to a physical and verbal confrontation in Mākena last week that resulted in concussion injuries to one of the male victims, police said.
