Storm SE of New Zealand Sends Swell to South Shores of Maui

A large storm southeast of New Zealand last week is sending a south-southwest swell toward the Hawaiian Islands, according to the National Weather Service.

A long period north northeast swell, combined with locally generated wind waves has prompted a high surf advisory along the east facing shores of Maui County.

An east swell generated by Tropical Storm Marie will begin entering Hawaiian waters tonight, creating advisory level surf along the east facing shores of Maui County, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has since cancelled the high surf advisory that was in effect earlier for the east facing shores of Maui and Molokaʻi.

“Strengthening trade winds will produce large and rough surf along east facing shores through Tuesday,” the forecast stated.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service are projecting surf of 5 to 8 feet along the east facing shores of Maui and Molokaʻi, prompting a high surf advisory for both islands through 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2014.

6-9 Foot Surf Forecast for East Side of Maui, Molokaʻi

Forecasters with the NWS say surf is expected to be in the 6 to 9 foot range along the east facing shores, and will produce rip currents, and localized beach erosion.

North Shore Surf 14-18 Feet, East Side 8-12

Surf along the north facing shores of of Maui and Molokaʻi is expected to remain elevated at 14 to 18 feet today, according to an advisory issued by the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say the surf made its way down to Niʻihau and Kauaʻi overnight, and is expected to reach Oʻahu by sunrise, and reach Maui and Molokaʻi by mid-morning today.

WARNING: 40 to 50 Foot Surf Expected Along North Shores

The forecast calls for surf to be in the 40 to 50 foot range along the north facing shores of affected islands; 20 to 30 feet along the west facing shores of Oʻahu and Molokaʻi; and 12 to 18 feet along the west facing shores of Hawaiʻi Island.
